About Us History of the Society of Our Mother of Peace
The Society of Our Mother of Peace was founded in Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma by Father Placid Guste. The original foundation was
transferred to Springfield Missouri in 1977. In the meantime, in 1971
a second foundation was made in High Ridge Missouri, approximately
twenty miles from St. Louis Missouri. A third foundation was made in
1998 in the Philippines and a fourth in Nigeria in 2002.
The Society is composed of two separate communities: the Sons of
Our Mother of Peace for Religious Priests and Brothers and the
Daughters of Our Mother of Peace for Religious Sisters. It was born
of an inner call to combine the contemplative and apostolic lives in a
context of material simplicity in such a manner that the apostolic call
would express rather than submerge the contemplative spirit.
Needless to say, there lies nothing unique in this desire. But the
structural framework of the Society united with the spiritual
orientation of St. John of the Cross is specifically ordained to intensify
the contemplative-apostolic thrust.
Within the religious communities an alternate form or structure is available for those who feel called to the
same depth of consecrated life but with a more apostolic orientation and less solitude. These brothers
and sisters live in a convent or religious house closer to the city than the wooded areas used by the
original structure monasteries which are called Solitudes. One such grouping began in July of 1976 in
St. Louis Missouri.
Our Lay Member community has been with The Society of Our Mother of Peace from the very beginning.
Lay Members live on the property of Mary the Font Solitude in High Ridge Missouri. They are involved
in the apostolate of direct evangelization and work related to it. This is a great option for those of you
who want to help maintain our mission with your life skills and be free to love Jesus with all your heart.
Our bell tower sounds out our community
prayer times and can be heard all over
our heavily forested retreat site. Each
private hermitage has a bathroom, heating
and air conditioning for your comfort
and are privately scattered along our
woodland paths for your solitude.
